Why Trevor Lawrence didn’t pick up the Jaguars’ draft night calls

No, Trevor Lawrence didn’t intend to go radio silent on the Jacksonville Jaguars during last month’s 2021 NFL Draft.

Speaking to “Pro Football Talk PM” on Wednesday, this year’s first overall pick addressed the recent revelation from Jaguars brass that they had trouble connecting with Lawrence on draft night.

“I don’t know, honestly,” Lawrence said about the snafu. “I was sitting there by my phone. Had my Bose headphones in there, just waiting.”

For months, many anticipated Lawrence to be the Jaguars’ quarterback of the future. When it came time for Jacksonville to make the call, they were directed to Lawrence’s voicemail three times.

Lawrence, who watched the NFL Draft from home in South Carolina with his new wife, Marissa Mowry, said “the service was terrible.”

“I live kind of in the woods in South Carolina. That was where my place was and the service was terrible. I guess that’s what it was. People were texting me like, ‘I didn’t know you hung up on them three times in a row.’ And I’m like, ‘I didn’t even get the calls,’ ” Lawrence said.

Fortunately, the Jaguars’ new head coach, Urban Meyer, got in touch with Lawrence and officially welcomed him to Jacksonville, where he’ll be teammates with quarterback-turned-tight end, Tim Tebow.

Recently, Lawrence shed light on his new offensive weapon, stating on the AP Pro Football podcast that Tebow is “just a guy that you want to be around.”

Tebow signed with the Jaguars earlier this month.
