MetLife Stadium in contention to host WWE SummerSlam

MetLife Stadium is in the running to host one of WWE’s biggest pay-per-views this summer.

The home of the Jets and Giants is one of six NFL stadiums being considered for SummerSlam in August, according to a Sports Business Journal report on Thursday. The other sites in the mix are Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, Houston’s NRG Stadium, Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas and Nashville’s, Nissan Stadium.

There have been multiple reports previously that Las Vegas is the front-runner to land the event, as it would coincide nicely with WWE’s touring schedule. But the announcement of Manny Pacquiao’s fight against Errol Spence on Saturday, Aug. 21 at MGM Grand could complicate things. WWE is considering moving SummerSlam to Saturday for the first time, according to Sports Business Journal.

This would also mark the first time SummerSlam would be held at an NFL team’s stadium – something traditionally reserved for WrestleMania. Doing so would give WWE an outdoor venue and increased capacity from an indoor arena, which is more ideal as the country works its way out of the coronavirus pandemic.

MetLife has hosted two WrestleManias, most recently in 2019. SummerSlam has not been in the New York area since 2018 at Barclays Center.
